You heard a bang. The door will not budge. Here is what happened and what happens next.
A torsion spring stores the energy that lifts the door. When the steel finally cracks, that energy lets go all at once, which is the gunshot noise half of Surprise has heard from the kitchen. The door is now dead weight, and the next ten minutes matter.
The sequence is almost always the same. A loud crack from the garage, sometimes at night, sometimes the moment someone presses the button. Then the opener strains, lifts the door a few inches and gives up, or does not move it at all. Look at the shaft above the door: a torsion spring with a two-inch gap in its coils is broken. On an older door with springs along the tracks, a spring lying slack or dangling means the same thing. The door has not been damaged; it has simply lost the thing that was carrying its weight.
What to do right now. Stop pressing the button; every attempt stresses the opener's drive gear and can strip it. Do not try to lift the door by hand. A two-car insulated door is 200 pounds or more without its spring, and it will come down on fingers and feet. Do not pull the red release cord if the door is open, because the door will drop. If the car is inside and you need it, say so on the call and the job becomes an emergency. If you can wait until the technician arrives, the door is safest left exactly as it is.
Why it broke. Springs fail on cycle count, and the West Valley spends cycles fast. Garage heat above 130°F in summer fatigues the wire; monsoon dust grinds in the coils; and on the thousands of homes in Sun City, Sun City West and Sun City Grand where the garage is the front door, the spring works ten times a day. A standard spring lasts about three years on that schedule. Rust pitting from sprinkler overspray is the other killer, and a spring usually lets go at a pit while fully wound, which is why it so often happens with the door closed.
What the repair involves. The technician measures the broken spring and the door, fits a matched set from the truck, replaces the cables if they are frayed, winds the door to balance, resets the opener and runs the reverse test. On a two-car door it is about an hour, same day. If the opener's gear was stripped by the attempts to lift the door, that is a second item on the sheet and you see it before anyone proceeds. See the spring replacement page for the measuring and cycle choices in detail.
How the job is handled
Same-day priority
A door that cannot lift is seen the day you call across the whole service area; say emergency if a car is trapped.
Do-not-touch guidance on the call
The dispatcher walks you through keeping the door and the opener safe until the truck arrives.
Springs on the truck
Matched sets in the sizes that fit the 16×7 and 9×7 doors most West Valley homes have.
Collateral damage checked
Opener gear, cables and bottom brackets inspected, because a broken spring rarely breaks alone.
Written before wound
The spring set, any cables, the gear if needed, and labor, on paper before the winding bars come out.
High-cycle offered
On a door that works all day you are shown the 25,000-cycle option and its cost per year.

From the field

Asked about broken spring repair
How do I know it is the spring and not the opener?
The bang is the giveaway. Confirm it by looking at the shaft above the door for a gap in the coils. If the door is also very heavy when you try to lift it with the opener released (do not do this if the door is open), the spring is gone.
Can I keep using the door with one spring broken?
No. The opener will strip its gear trying, and lifting by hand is dangerous. A trapped car is an emergency call; otherwise leave the door until the technician arrives.
How long will it take to get fixed?
Same day. The springs are on the truck and the swap takes about an hour, including rebalancing and resetting the opener.
Why did it break overnight when nobody used it?
A spring is under the most tension when the door is closed and fully wound. Fatigue cracks and rust pits give way under that load, so springs often fail in the small hours with nobody near them.
Should I replace the second spring too?
Yes. It was installed on the same day, has the same cycles, and will break soon. A set keeps the door balanced and costs far less than a second visit.
Is a broken spring covered by home insurance?
Generally not; it is wear and tear. If the failing spring damaged the opener or a panel in a sudden event, ask your agent, but most spring jobs are an out-of-pocket repair.
